Let the third proportional be x.

By definition of third proportional:
18 : 36 = 36 : x

So,
18/36 = 36/x

Cross-multiplying:
18x = 36 × 36
18x = 1296

x = 1296/18
x = 72

Thus, the third proportional is 72.
